An extremely hot day under the sun, with a lot of birds to show for it. We saw Purple Martins (pic above right) from the shore, then a short boat-ride took us across to the island. Common Tern and Laughing Gull (pic above left) at the dock on the other side.
Ospreys (nesting), hundreds of Caspian Terns, Least Terns, Hummingbird, Cedar Waxwing, Least Bittern and Yellow-billed Cuckoo (pic above). The first shorebird stop yielded Lesser Yellowlegs, Killdeer, Semipalmated Plover, Pectoral Sandpiper and Black Terns. Second major shorebird stop yielded Short-billed Dowitcher, Stilt Sandpiper and Western Sandpiper. The birds slowed down towards lunchtime and we hid inside for a good hour in the ac, and a necessary water refill. After lunch the hike back was long and hot and not very birdy (although I had a very poor look at six Blue-winged Teals, but the return to the first spot turned up Greater Yellowlegs, Forster's Tern and Royal Tern - a total of six terns and thirteen new birds (over 50 species in total).
