Late Post: Saturday. Wicomico County Cypress Swamps, Assateague and Ocean City

An early start took me to the Cypress Swamps in Wicomico County, the state's best area for Prothonotary Warbler (a life bird for me).  Following some wonderful directions (thanks!), I managed to find a fair few of these beautiful little things.  Given how dark it was in the swamp, how much they move and how great they were, a photo of any kind merits posting (and also a white-eyed vireo singing on the way out there).

Assateague brought a couple more life birds, including the beautiful Tricolored Heron, seen through the scope and heat haze on the road to the National Shore entry (where we also saw my first Common Loon of the year in sull summer splendour), and Boat-Tailed Grackle (pic; female), seen all over.
The Life of the Marsh trail held an impressive flight of Glossy Ibises ans some Little Blue Herons (which beat their Great cousins hands down in looks if not size).

Fearing we had had too much sun, we retreated to Ocean city for late lunch overlooking Skimmer Island, where there were two more life birds, Black Skimmers and American Oystercatchers.  The Skimmers and the Prothonotary Warblers are vying for my current favorite Maryland bird title.
