A long, exhausting, but exceptionally birdy day at Mai Po and Long Valley - two of Hong Kong's primo sites. Stand-out bird was the Black-faced Spoonbill, of which we saw thirty-plus. This site is the largest winter site worldwide for this endangered species.
Starting out on the entrance road, we found Temminck's Stint, Kentish and Little Ringed Plovers, Intermediate Egret, Avocets and others in a muddy pool. Over the other side of the road in some fish pools, we had Scaly-breasted Munia, a Wryneck, Common Kingfisher, Chinese Pond Heron, Collared Crow and a few ducks. A little further on, we started seeing Starlings, with Red-billed and Black-collared definite lifers.
In the Mai Po parking lot, we had Asian Brown Flycatcher and Red Turtle/Collared Dove. In the reserve itself (for which access is complicated and involves prior application), we found Marsh Sandpiper, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Imperial Eagle, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Asian Koel, Dusky Warbler, Pied Kingfisher, House Swift, .
We then moved on to Long Valley for a couple of hours at the end of the day and found Olive-backed, Richard's, and Red-throated Pipits.
